Quality Lead - 9 Month Fixed Term Contract
About Us
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!
The Role
We're building out our Quality function, and we need an experienced leader to help us set it up and hand over the keys. This is a fixed-term role (~9 months) where you'll be designing and embedding quality systems, processes, and best practices to ensure we ship top-tier hardware and software—both now and in the future.
We have a Quality Manager in the business who is temporarily stepping into another role to cover a critical need. This leaves an opening for someone who is experienced in and passionate about Quality to help us rapidly build our Quality foundations and ensure a smooth transition when the role wraps up.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
- Develop & Implement a Quality Management System (QMS) – Establish and document core quality processes aligned with industry standards to ensure consistent, high-quality product delivery.
- Embed Quality Processes Across the Business – Integrate quality control and assurance into engineering, manufacturing, and operations to ensure hardware and software quality.
- Mentor & Develop Internal Quality Capability – Coach and train the Quality Manager, ensuring knowledge transfer for long-term quality management sustainability.
- Manage Supplier Quality Operations – Oversee supplier quality in China, conducting audits and performance reviews to drive manufacturing quality improvements.
- Establish Robust Product Testing & Release Processes – Define and implement testing protocols, defect tracking, and issue resolution processes to maintain high product standards.
- Ensure Smooth Knowledge Handover – Document workflows and improvements, ensuring seamless transition of quality processes post-contract.
-
Drive Continuous Improvement in Quality – Identify gaps and introduce scalable, data-driven improvements to evolve quality systems.
To be clear—this isn’t about maintaining an existing system. You'll be building the QMS from the ground up, defining how we manage quality, mentoring our internal team, and ensuring supplier quality is locked in. You’ll also oversee a Supplier Quality Manager in China and upskill our internal Quality Manager so the team can run effectively into the future.
If you love building, optimising, and leaving behind a well-structured, self-sustaining system, we’d love to hear from you.
Please note: This role will require travel to China, and domestically.
About You
We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:
- Extensive experience in quality management (typically 10+ years, but we welcome applicants with equivalent expertise), preferably with exposure to both hardware and software development, and manufacturing processes
- Strong background in developing and implementing Quality Management Systems (QMS) and aligning with ISO 9001 or other industry standards
- Proven experience in supplier quality management, including audits, corrective actions, and performance improvement with overseas manufacturers (China experience preferred)
- Hands-on experience with hardware and software quality assurance, including testing protocols, defect tracking, and release processes
- Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean, PFMEA) and a data-driven approach to problem-solving
- Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, operations, and supply chain teams to embed quality processes in product development and production
- Strong project management skills to drive structured improvements within a fixed-term contract, ensuring impact is delivered within the 9-month window
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills to align leadership, suppliers, and internal teams around quality objectives
Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
