Head of Operations

About Us
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!
The Role
We're building out our Operations function at Basis, and we need an experienced leader to help us accelerate our operational maturity and prepare for rapid growth. This is a senior role where you'll define and execute our manufacturing, supply chain and customer support strategies, ensuring our products are delivered to world-class standards of quality and efficiency—today and into the future.
As Head of Operations, you will be a key member of the Basis Leadership Team, reporting directly to the CEO. You’ll oversee multiple operational functions, including manufacturing, supply chain, customer support, quality assurance, and our internal Compliance Lab, initially leading a team of 4-5 direct reports.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
- Own and strengthen relationships with our primary contract manufacturer and strategic suppliers to ensure efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality production
- Strategically manage the global supply chain to minimise risk, reduce lead times, and optimise costs, including oversight of logistics operations and our 3PL partner
- Lead the Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) process, encompassing demand planning, forecasting, inventory management, and capacity planning
- Develop scalable and resilient operational processes and controls to support Basis’ international growth, proactively identifying and mitigating risks
- Oversee the establishment of a QMS and core quality processes, which are led by the Quality Manager
- Through the Quality function, drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction
- Oversee Basis' in-house Compliance Lab, driving improvements in operations to be more efficient and reliable, and shaping strategies for capability expansion
- Oversee the Customer Support team, providing targeted support to homeowners, electricians, and wholesaler accounts
- Shape feedback loops from Customer Support into other functions in the business, e.g. Product, Engineering, Sales, & Marketing
To be clear—this role isn’t about maintaining existing systems. It’s about building new, world-class operational capabilities within an innovative, rapidly evolving company. If the idea of shaping something exceptional excites you, we'd love to hear from you!
Note that this role will require some international travel to Asia.
Please note; we aim for this role to start with Basis in June/July so please let us know if you are under time pressure to accept a role.
About You
We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:
- Significant experience in managing manufacturing and supply chain operations, demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility and impact, ideally in companies producing electronics products
- A proven track record managing strategic suppliers and/or contract manufacturers (preferred) and leading strategic sourcing exercises
- Experience with quality management systems, compliance, and global certification processes
- Proven experience leading and developing high-performing teams, including experience mentoring and growing team leaders
- A strategic thinker, comfortable balancing long-term planning with day-to-day operational excellence
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, adept at leveraging data to drive continuous improvements
- Clear, candid and concise communication skills - both written and verbal, but also an ability to be kind and compassionate when dealing with others
Some nice-to-haves include:
- Experience managing fulfilment and customer support operations (you'll manage these teams, but we have a CS Lead in place that brings their own expertise, so you don't need to be the strongest here yourself)
Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
