Product Manager - Home Experience

🚀 About Us
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!
😎 The Role
An exciting opportunity join our Product team as a Product Manager has arisen at Basis. This is a senior role that calls for exceptional leadership and technical skills.
As a Product Manager, you will play a pivotal role in steering the development of our smart panel ecosystem. You will sit at the intersection of technology, people, and business.
Leveraging your understanding of product development, technical complexity, and product management methods, you will guide the creation of cutting-edge products that push boundaries and exceed customer expectations.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
- Strategy & Vision: Develop and own the product vision and strategy for the Home Experience value stream, aligning it with Basis's overall business goals.
- Customer & Market Insight: Lead discovery efforts, alongside squads to deeply understand customer needs, market opportunities, and competitive landscapes, acting as the primary customer voice.
- Roadmap & Prioritisation: Create, maintain, and prioritise product roadmaps, ensuring focus and impactful outcomes through effective backlog and release planning.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner closely with tech, delivery, marketing, and design teams to ensure seamless execution, clear communication of product plans, and alignment on business objectives.
- Requirements & Definition: Own the end-to-end definition of product and business requirements, translating them into clear concepts, features, and acceptance criteria.
- Performance & Metrics: Define, track, and report on key metrics and KPIs to measure product success and strategic initiatives.
- Driving Quality & Launches: Support comprehensive testing and validation, and collaborate on go-to-market efforts for product launches.
- Company Contribution: Contribute to broader company initiatives, including recruitment, fostering a diverse and inclusive culture, and continuous self-development.
🧐 Why this role is a unique challenge?
This is a critical role in a pre-revenue, fast-growing tech startup and you will be joining around the time of our first product launch. You'll need to quickly get up to speed in a complex domain, contribute to the strategic direction of our core consumer product, and drive quality outcomes in a dynamic environment.
🤩 About You
We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:
- 5+ years of dedicated Product Management experience, ideally with a strong focus on consumer-facing digital products (apps and web-based).
- Proven expertise in product strategy and roadmap ownership, including research, prioritisation, trade-offs, and defining clear product and business requirements.
- Exceptional ability to align product vision with overarching business strategy, driving decisions with a strong ROI and commercial mindset.
- Demonstrated success in stakeholder management across an ecosystem, adept at communicating complex product context, expectations, and reasoning to diverse internal and external audiences.
- A natural inclination for user-centricity, acting as the customer voice and leading discovery to deeply understand market opportunities and user needs.
- Comfort in a fast-paced, startup environment, with the grit and determination to navigate resource constraints and rapidly adapt to change. You're a do-er who rolls up their sleeves to solve problems.
- A highly collaborative approach, with a knack for influencing and getting people on board.
- Strategic acumen combined with pragmatic execution, able to define long-term vision while driving immediate impact.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, coupled with an ability to be kind and compassionate in interactions.
Some nice to haves include:
- Experience in the electricity industry is a bonus, particularly managing products in energy management
- Experience with embedded systems and hardware development would be a plus
Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
