Compliance Lab Intern

About Us
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
The Role
As our Compliance Test Lab Intern, you'll be right at the heart of our product development, ensuring our innovative hardware (like switchboards and circuit modules!) meets all the necessary standards. This isn't just about ticking boxes; it's about contributing to safe, reliable products that will power homes sustainably.
You'll be working closely with our awesome team to execute testing, contribute to continuous development projects, and get a solid exposure to the world of compliance testing and certification.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
Here’s a taste of what you'll be doing:
- Hands-on Testing: Assisting with setting up and executing electrical tests on our products, following precise procedures and safety protocols. Support maintenance and calibration of lab equipment as needed.
- Data Driven: Recording and organising test data accurately for analysis and reporting.
- Continuous Improvement: Helping us identify ways to make our lab processes even better, supporting the creation and enhancement of automation scripts for testing and data processing. Assisting with implementing improvements to lab procedures, tools, or documentation
- Documentation and Collaboration: Documenting test setups and findings, and collaborating with engineers, compliance specialists, and product teams to align on test requirements. Ensure version control and accessibility of lab documents for other stakeholders.
- Communication: Communicate test findings and raise issues or anomalies proactively. Provide feedback on the usability and effectiveness of lab processes.
- Company Accountabilities: Contributing to our vibrant culture through self-development, honest feedback, genuine engagement, supporting DEIB initiatives, and participating in our social and environmental programs.
In this internship, you'll be working from our recently refurbished central Christchurch offices with some of the brightest minds in the engineering community. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting edge and modern lab equipment and gain useful practical experience with high voltage testing as well as learning more about how products get to market.
About You
We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following experience and skills:
- Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in mechatronics, electronics, or software engineering
- A drive for continuous improvement; constantly asking how can we do this better? How can we automate repetitive tasks? Where can we leverage AI to help us do things quicker?
- An understanding of safe working practices around electrical test equipment
- Diligence in following processes and recording results
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Some nice to haves include:
- Experience with electrical testing, ideally at mains voltage (230V)
Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
