Head of Finance - 12 Month Fixed Term Contract

About Us
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!
The Role
We’re on the hunt for a seasoned and strategic Head of Finance to step into the driver’s seat while our current finance leader is on parental leave. This 12+ month opportunity is perfect for someone looking to make an outsized impact in a high-growth, purpose-led environment — one where a year’s work can feel like five (in all the best ways).
You’ll be joining a tight-knit leadership team on a bold journey to commercialise and scale one of NZ’s most exciting hardware/software products globally. From financial strategy to day-to-day operations, you’ll be critical to the way we make decisions, raise capital, and build sustainable momentum.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
- Own our runway and liquidity planning, ensuring financial clarity and control as we scale.
- Drive non-dilutive funding sources (grants, RDTI, working capital solutions) and maintain strong relationships with capital providers.
- Lead budgeting processes across teams, embedding discipline and accountability.
- Partner with Ops and Sales to forecast cash flows and manage working capital (e.g., through S&OP leadership).
- Oversee accounting, payroll, tax, and financial compliance — ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with NZ and global requirements.
- Drive the evolution of finance systems and processes (especially AI-enhanced workflows) for scale and efficiency.
- Own internal KPI and BI reporting.
- Maintain and evolve the company’s financial model
- Partner with leadership to model, plan, and guide long-term strategy.
- Support fundraising efforts by preparing financial data, projections, and investor materials. Collaborate with investors and potential backers to facilitate due diligence and secure funding
- Own our insurance and out-sourced legal relationships, and supporting with legal matters as required.
- Manage a small team of one

- Previous experience working with commercial finance and fundraising experience (this is highly desirable!)
- Prior experience implementing new finance systems and processes, and ideally possesses a good understanding of finance workflow automation and AI tools.
- Comfort in the face of ambiguity

- Determination and tenacity, maintaining a positive attitude in challenging situations
- Clear, candid and concise communication skills - both written and verbal, but also an ability to be kind and compassionate when dealing with others
Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
