Mechatronics Development Intern

About Us
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
The Role
The Mechatronics Development Intern will support the engineering team in the design, analysis, and testing. This role is focused on applying mechanical engineering principles to the product development lifecycle, from concept validation through to manufacturing readiness.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
- Design, build, and commission a mechanical test rig to validate product performance and generate insights for our next-generation platform.
- Define test requirements, create detailed CAD designs, source components, and get hands-on with assembly and commissioning.
- Drive continuous improvement of existing hardware by updating drawings, incorporating manufacturing feedback, and managing changes through the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process.
- Document and communicate design updates clearly to ensure smooth alignment with manufacturing.
- Provide sustaining engineering support for products in production — from root cause analysis and problem-solving to designing jigs and fixtures that improve assembly efficiency.
- Collaborate closely with quality and supply chain teams to resolve component-level issues and keep production running smoothly.
This internship will have a mixture of hardware design, coding, but with a heavy lean on mechanical design. It would suit a student who is currently in their 3rd or 4th year of an Engineering degree majoring in Mechanical Design or Mechatronics.
Please note: Due to anticipated high applicant volumes, the closing date for this internship will be Friday the 26th of September. We will not accept applications after this date.
About You
We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:
- Currently undertaking tertiary study at Bachelor's level or higher, majoring in mechanical or mechatronics
- Demonstrable hands-on building experience
- Proficiency in 3D parametric CAD is essential; direct experience with Onshape is highly advantageous
- Strong understanding of core mechanical engineering principles, including engineering drawing standards and tolerance analysis
- A proactive and detail-oriented individual with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative engineering team
- An ability to take initiative, follow through on what you say you’ll do, and own your mistakes
- Determination and tenacity, maintaining a positive attitude to push forward despite setbacks
Some nice to haves include:
- Experience applying your skills outside of your academic subjects through extracurricular pursuits, or hobby projects in engineering
- Familiarity with thermal management concepts is highly desirable
Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
Benefits
