System Integration Engineer
About Us
At Basis, we’re not just building a company — we’re building the future. We’re redesigning the electrical systems that power our homes to fight climate change, reduce household costs, and create a better future for generations to come. That means rethinking everything, not just what we build, but how we build it.
To do this, we need incredible people. People who are bold, creative, sharp, and thoughtful. People who care. People who move fast and think differently. That’s where you come in.
The Role
We’re looking for a System Integration Engineer who loves sitting at the crossroads of cloud and embedded systems. You’ll explore, prototype, and ultimately integrate third-party energy hardware and APIs - everything from EV chargers to batteries - into our platform. This is a role for someone who gets energised by figuring things out, especially when the blueprint is still being defined.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
- Rapidly integrating third-party energy devices (EV chargers, solar inverters, batteries, and more) by building and validating early API connections
- Creating proof-of-concept backend services and prototypes to demonstrate new capabilities and uncover technical constraints
- Investigating device quirks, connection challenges, and vendor docs to make hardware come alive in our ecosystem
- Turning successful prototypes into production-ready, scalable integrations built on modern cloud infrastructure
- Collaborating with senior engineers to develop reliable services with strong observability, CI/CD, and operational resilience
- Maintaining and supporting the integrations you’ve built to keep them healthy and high-performing in the field
- Producing clear documentation to support long-term ownership, knowledge-sharing, and ongoing maintenance
About You
We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:
- Strong experience with backend development using languages like Go, Python, or Node.js, plus deploying services on cloud platforms
- Confidence integrating RESTful APIs, authentication flows (e.g., OAuth), and working with formats like JSON
- A hands-on mindset—comfortable in Linux environments, and keen to tinker with embedded systems or physical hardware
- A knack for debugging across the full stack, from physical device behaviour to cloud service logic
- Ability to adapt quickly, solve problems creatively, and learn independently when documentation is limited
- Solid collaboration skills, especially when working across disciplines and business units
- A basic understanding of electrical concepts like voltage, power, and AC/DC
- Comfort working through ambiguity and shaping solutions from early prototypes
- Experience with Go in production
- Knowledge of embedded or industrial protocols like Modbus or CAN bus
- Familiarity with IoT standards such as MQTT, BLE, or Matter
- A personal or professional interest in energy hardware (EV chargers, solar/battery systems, etc.)
Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
Benefits
- A competitive salary and employee share scheme (ESOP)
- A hybrid work culture with a mixture of office days for collaborating with your team, and work from home days for deep focus
- Unlimited annual leave so that you can take the time that you need to re-energise
- Tools of trade, including laptop and headphone allowance
- Flexible hours - we focus on outcomes, so adjust your day around whānau, hobbies, or other commitments
- A schedule of fun team events throughout the year (Lego Battlebots, table tennis, themed Friday drinks, and more!)
- Office dogs + steady supply of fresh fruit and snacks in the office
- Access to Clearhead, our well-being programme which gives you 5x free sessions with a psychologist per year
- A commitment to diversity and inclusion: Pride Committee and partnering with Pride Pledge, DEIB Committee, EEO Policy and well-being strategy!
- Parental leave policy that tops up wages to 100% for the primary caregiver for up to 22 weeks and up to 6 weeks for secondary caregivers (conditions apply)
- The opportunity to learn and develop from some of the best and brightest minds in the industry!
