Senior Platform Engineer
About Us
At Basis, we’re not just building a company — we’re building the future. We’re redesigning the electrical systems that power our homes to fight climate change, reduce household costs, and create a better future for generations to come. That means rethinking everything, not just what we build, but how we build it.
To do this, we need incredible people. People who are bold, creative, sharp, and thoughtful. People who care. People who move fast and think differently. That’s where you come in.
The Role
We're looking for a senior engineer to own the infrastructure and reliability of our platform. You'll keep the systems that process data from our growing network of IoT components available, observable and able to scale, and work with the rest of the team to build the backend services and APIs that power our applications and partners.
A significant part of the role sits with our metering platform. Basis is its own Metering Equipment Provider, a regulated business unit where platform faults have a direct cost to our retailer relationships. You'll be the person who resolves them.
Location: Christchurch or Auckland, with hybrid flexibility.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll own the platform's infrastructure and reliability while building and supporting the services that run on it. Some of the things you'll be involved in include:
Infrastructure: own the performance, scaling and maintenance of our infrastructure as we grow from 500 to 50,000 panels, and lead consolidation of our legacy AWS account infrastructure.
Reliability: lead incident response and root-cause analysis, and drive the work that prevents repeat incidents.
Observability and CI/CD: instrument our applications with robust monitoring, logging and alerting, and design and improve the pipelines that deliver software rapidly, safely and automatically.
Distributed systems: design, develop and maintain scalable, resilient backend services that process large volumes of data from our distributed IoT components.
APIs: construct and evolve secure, well-documented APIs for our mobile and web apps, B2B partners and internal services.
Metering troubleshooting: diagnose and resolve platform-layer metering issues, including meter messaging faults, data matching failures and registry reconciliation errors, at the speed our retailer commitments require.
Platform support: act as a subject matter expert for the core platform and its operational health, and work through the metering platform backlog.
Quality and standards: write clean, tested, documented code, mentor and peer-review across the software team, and tackle technical debt.
This is more than a coding role. You'll have a crucial voice across the development lifecycle, from system design and documentation to CI/CD and observability, with the autonomy that comes from being one of a small number of people who know these systems.
About You
We think you'll be a fit if you have a track record of owning systems end to end, with the depth to run production platforms and the backend skills to build on them. You'll bring:
5+ years of experience in infrastructure, SRE or platform engineering, including backend development, ideally with IoT or data-intensive systems
Proficiency with at least one cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure) and Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g. Terraform)
Hands-on experience running production systems: incident response, monitoring and alerting, and capacity planning
Experience running SQL databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)
Demonstrated expertise in designing, building and operating scalable, distributed systems and APIs (REST or GraphQL)
Experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines
Hands-on experience writing meaningful unit, integration and end-to-end tests
The ability to understand problems and their impact on customers, and to design robust technical solutions
A track record of working with a high degree of autonomy and owning systems end to end
Nice to have:
Experience with Go
Hands-on experience with container orchestration using Kubernetes
Experience building IoT systems or data-intensive platforms
Familiarity with event-driven architecture and message brokers such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
Experience with observability stacks (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)
Experience defining SLOs and error budgets
Experience in regulated or metering environments
