Senior Data Engineer
About Us
At Basis, we’re not just building a company — we’re building the future. We’re redesigning the electrical systems that power our homes to fight climate change, reduce household costs, and create a better future for generations to come. That means rethinking everything, not just what we build, but how we build it.
To do this, we need incredible people. People who are bold, creative, sharp, and thoughtful. People who care. People who move fast and think differently. That’s where you come in.
The Role
We're looking for a senior data engineer to own our data platform. Our panels produce high-rate, high-resolution data about how electrical energy moves through homes. Your work will turn that data into evidence our regulator relies on, models our customers make decisions with, and insights the energy industry will pay for.
You'll build and run the pipelines, the automated quality controls that demonstrate regulatory compliance for our metering business, and the savings and Mission Control models behind our customer-facing claims. You'll work alongside software, embedded and hardware engineers, with the autonomy that comes from being the person who knows the data platform end to end.
This is a senior seat. You'll hold the platform with little supervision, so we need someone flexible, with a high degree of autonomy and ownership, who can hit the ground running. You'll report to our Engineering Lead – Platform.
Location: Christchurch or Auckland, with hybrid flexibility. Note; there will be some travel to Christchurch required if you are based out of Auckland.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll own the data platform end to end. Some of the things you'll be involved in include:
Data infrastructure: architect and maintain data infrastructure for analytics, modelling and reporting across cloud and edge platforms.
Pipelines: build, maintain and improve batch and streaming data pipelines.
Automated data quality control: establish pipelines that compare required performance to measured results, evidencing regulatory compliance for our metering business.
Metering data products: own the reporting and data products that our commercial and regulatory obligations depend on.
Heterogeneous data: link our products' high-rate, high-resolution data with national and global climate, energy and financial data streams.
Models: own the savings and Mission Control models, their validation and the fleet reporting behind them.
Data best practices: enforce the quality, security, governance, availability and lineage of data across the platform.
Testing and standards: set up and maintain test frameworks, including continuous integration and data QC; supply data for systems integration testing; and review peers' code to lift data engineering standards across the team.
About You
We think you'll be a fit if you have a track record of owning data systems end to end, with pipelines that have produced lasting results rather than only moving data from A to B. You'll bring:
5+ years in a data engineering role building end-to-end ETL pipelines and datasets, and working with data warehouses, data lakes and the associated infrastructure, ideally with high-rate time-series or sensor data
Experience building, maintaining and improving batch and streaming data pipelines
Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, and storage optimised for high-speed time series data
Experience implementing DevOps practices within the data platform, including CI/CD, data observability, monitoring and lineage
The ability to write software in at least two of: C, C++, C#, Rust, Go, Python, JavaScript
An understanding of the wider system beyond software, and the ability to articulate the impact of systems decisions on software and vice versa
A track record of working with a high degree of autonomy and owning systems end to end
Comfort with uncertainty and a team-first attitude: you work well in a cross-disciplinary team and contribute to the overall product
Nice to have:
Experience with Go
Streaming protocols such as MQTT or ZMQ
Log processing, especially with Fluentd
Query engines over data lakes (e.g. Athena/Trino, BigQuery)
Experience with custom electronics or real-time sensor data
A background in signal processing or data science
Experience in regulated or metering data environments
Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
